Virginia Rentko, VMD, DACVIM
Hospital Director

Dr. Virginia RentkoDr. Virginia Rentko is a board-certified veterinary internist. She joined the team at Tufts VETS as Hospital Director in 2009 and holds a clinical appointment at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Dr. Rentko's professional interests include hematology, infectious diseases and general internal medicine.

Dr. Rentko earned a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Boston University and a Master's Degree in Zoology from The Ohio State University. She attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and was awarded a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1987. She completed an internship in medicine and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and a residency in Internal Medicine at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Rentko is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association and the Association of Veterinary Hematology and Transfusion Medicine. She has published articles in various scientific journals and book chapters on topics in hematology. Dr. Rentko has lectured internationally on the topic of blood substitutes, a topic on which she has spent much of her career. Prior to Tufts VETS, she worked on the development of the first commercially successful blood substitute for dogs in the United States and Europe and held an adjunct appointment in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. She has held various management positions, most recently, Vice President of Preclinical Research at Biopure Corporation.

Outside of work, Dr. Rentko enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, gardening and sports.
